In 2002, longtime Sacramento radio personality Dennis Newhall and collector Jeff Hughson saw an opportunity to illustrate the history of rock and roll in Sacramento and vicinity. When the building that formerly housed Crabshaw Corner and The Oasis Ballroom became available, it was the perfect place for Dennis and Jeff to pay homage to the entire 60-year history of rock music, rock radio, and rock graphics in the Capital. The Sacramento Rock and Radio Museum was born.
The Museum started as not much more than interesting dΓ©cor, but soon evolved into a stunningly large collection of concert posters and handbills, photos, 45's and LP's, radio hit surveys, promotional jackets and T-shirts, and even a collage of ticket stubs from 30 years of rock shows. Over the years the collection continued to grow through donations, discoveries, and purchases.
In 2018, Dennis Newhall gifted the entire collection to The Gerth Special Collections and University Archives at California State University, Sacramento. The current 2,070-piece collection ranges in date from the 1960s to the present day and continues to grow. The collection documents the majority of the music venues in Sacramento and the surrounding areas, not simply a single venue or multiple venues during a narrow time period. As such, the collection provides a unique resource for studying the art and music that appeared in Sacramento over a 70-year time period.
