-
Donald Stewart Lucas (1926-1998) was involved with the Mattachine Society, a pre-Stonewall gay rights organization more or less headquartered in San Francisco, California in the 1950s and early 60s. These 45 open reel audio tapes originated from a collection of Lucas's papers housed at the GLBT Historical Society. Many were recorded by Lucas himself. Harold "Hal" Call, who was MS president through these years, participates in most recordings, which chronicle annual conferences and meetings of the Society from 1954 to 1965 as well as educational programs produced by the Mattachine Society in 1962. There are also recordings of related broadcasts of San Francisco and Los Angeles radio & television programs. Other organizations in the collection include various local chapters of the Society, as well as the Daughters of Bilitis, One, Incorporated, Society for Individual Rights, Council on Religion and Homosexuality, and the San Francisco Tavern Guild.
