Scope and content:

Series 1 and 2 contains business and financial records, information on reality tours, reports, leaflets, brochures, newsletters, handouts, guides, program documents, correspondence, and miscellaneous publications. Series 1 also includes Medea Benjamin's Senate election race material and files related to their Reality Tours and other regional programs. Series 2 mostly consists of files related to their Fair Trade programs and efforts against sweatshops.

Series 3 mostly includes administrative correspondence, campaign proposals, budget and grant material, informational brochures and flyers, and press coverage. The majority of materials relate to Global Exchange's Reality Tours, administrative files from their Regional Campaigns, and materials from their work advocating for Fair Trade. There are also some materials related to their work protesting against sweatshops and other project.

Series 4 consists of audiovisual media from accessions acquired in 2002, 2012, and 2017. Media is mostly VHS tapes, DVDs, and CDs. There are some Mini DV videocassettes and audiocassettes. Duplicate listings may suggest copies of different formats.

Global Exchange is an advocacy group, human rights organization, and 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1988 and based in San Francisco, California. Founded by Medea Benjamin, Kevin Danaher, Kirsten Moller, and Kathie Klarreich, the organization's aim is to promote global economic, social, and political rights. The issues tackled by their campaigns and projects include the anti-war movement, clean energy, corporate accountability, fair trade, globalization, and human rights. Their work has been conducted in Afghanistan, Africa, California, China, Colombia, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, Palestine/Israel, and Venezuela. They have also provided Reality Tours to these regions as alternative options to conventional tourism.

Acquisition information:
This collection purchased by Stanford University, Special Collections in September 2001 and August 2002. Additional materials were gifted in February 2012 and March 2017.
Processing information:

Series 1 includes files acquired in 2001 and 2002. Consists of Boxes 1-141. Processed in 2008.

Series 2 includes material acquired in 2007. Consists of a map folder, Cartons 1-19, and a "Box 20". Processed in 2008.

Series 3 includes material from 2001 and 2002 which were previously unprocessed in 2008, and addenda material acquired in 2012 and 2017. Renumbering of material begins with Series 3 Box 1-79. Processed in 2025.

Series 4 includes all audiovisual media acquired in 2002, 2012, and 2017 which covers Series 4 Boxes 80-139. Processed in 2025.

Restrictions:

Open for research. Note that material must be requested at least 36 hours in advance of intended use. Audiovisual materials are not available in original format, and must be reformatted to a digital use copy.

These materials are made available for use in research, teaching, and private study. Any transmission or reproduction beyond that allowed by fair use requires permission from the owners of rights, heir(s) or assigns.
