Dorrance Stalvey was a composer, educator, and director of the Monday Evening Concerts series in Los Angeles from 1971 until his death in 2005. The collection includes extensive correspondence between Stalvey and other composers/presenters, musical materials including scores, audio recordings and electronic media, and Monday Evening Concerts programs, promotional materials and reviews. Stalvey's work as an educator is documented in syllabi and lecture notes. There are also personal documents of Stalvey's, including diplomas, passport, and letters to his parents.

Scope and content:

Collection includes scores, recordings, documentation, and other media related to Stalvey's work as a composer, as well as an extensive collection of correspondence covering 1944-2005. It also includes press and programs relating to the Monday Evening Concerts (MEC) series and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) music programs that occurred during the years of Stalvey's directorship. In addition, the collection includes programs and correspondence relating to Stalvey's career as a composer, such as letters of inquiry, grant applications, and programs of performances of his work. Biographical and personal materials include Stalvey's writings on music (others' and his own), appointment books, diplomas, and master's thesis. Stalvey's career as an educator is documented in syllabi, lecture notes, lectures and score samples used in classes.

The controversy over LACMA's decision to eliminate its music programming (circa 2004) is documented in printed emails and news articles. Other items of interest include a laudatory letter from composer and pedagogue Nadia Boulanger, and correspondence between Stalvey and composers Conlon Nancarrow and Ernst Krenek.

Biographical / historical:

Dorrance Stalvey was a composer, educator, and director of the Monday Evening Concerts series in Los Angeles from 1971 until his death in 2005.

He was a professor at Immaculate Heart College from 1968 to 1980 and had faculty positions at Pomona College (1968-1969) and the University of Southern California (1981-1982).

Stalvey was actively involved in the promotion of contemporary music through the many concerts he produced and presented as the director of Monday Evening Concerts. Stalvey and the series received six ASCAP/CMA Awards for Adventurous Programming, including one awarded posthumously for the 2004-2005 season. He participated in new music seminars and served on numerous advisory panels, including 8 years as a panelist and consultant for the National Endowment for the Arts to encourage the propagation of contemporary music. Among his honors and awards are ASCAP Composer Awards, three NEA Composer Fellowship Grants (two in the mid-1970s and one in the 1990s), a League-ISCM Commendation (1976), and a Prince Ranier de Monaco Composition Award (1961).
