Scope and content:

This collection includes an 1874 diary of trip to the missions of Southern California by Henry Lebbeus Oak and a biography of Oak by Henry R. Wagner. The diary is a ruled notebook bound in leather cover with 155 handwritten pages. This collection also contains a carbon copy of a typewritten copy of the original journal.

Biographical / historical:

Henry Lebbeus Oak (1844 May 13 - 1905 May 20) was born in Penobscot County, Maine. He emigrated to California, and in early 1869, Oak became Librarian of the Bancroft Library of San Francisco, California, a position he held for 18 years, until 1887. Upon retirement, he settled in Siegler Springs, California, where he built a cabin and lived the rest of his life, spending much of his time and money writing his family genealogical record.
