Background

Scope and content:

Friedrich Horst Winkler (1888-1965) was an art historian, renowned expert on Albrecht Dรผrer, and the head of the Berlin Museum of Prints and Drawings (Kupferstichkabinett) from 1933 until his retirement in 1957. The Museum of Prints and Drawings is still the largest museum of its kind in Germany and focusses on European drawings, prints, illuminated manuscripts, artist sketchbooks, and all kinds of graphic art. As head of this museum during a turbulent and historically important period, Winkler had an unparalleled perspective on the German cultural scene, and his correspondence includes discussions about offering restitution to colleagues who were chased out of Germany; the re-establishment of the art collections and reopening of the German museums after WWII; requests for authentication, attribution as well as claiming lost collections; owners seeking purchase of their art work by the museum due to personal financial hardships and other topics that continue to be of interest to researchers. The materials are in German and English.
