Background

Scope and content:

The Winifried Weiss and Robert Hagopian papers contain writings by them and photographs of their travels together. Weiss (1937-1991) published two acclaimed books. “A Nazi Childhood” is an intimate portrait of Germany and the Third Reich as seen from the perspective of a perceptive child. His short novel, “Stations,” is the memoir of a man caring for his lover who is dying of AIDS. Hagopian (1945-1984) was a renowned Bay Area pianist who specialized in 20th Century music and performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. His piano recordings of Béla Bartók won international acclaim. Writings by Weiss include a typescript entitled “Photographs of a Nazi Childhood,” published copies of his books, college papers, his PhD thesis, poems, stories and erotic writings. There are also materials from Capra Press, publisher of “A Nazi Childhood.” Writings by Hagopian include his PhD thesis and untitled musical compositions/annotations. There are also reviews of his recordings and performances, some publicity materials and several passports. The collection includes two photograph albums and other unsorted photographs (photocopies of these have been partially labeled). There is also a copy of a literary publication called “The Mountain Goat” (1960) and a few letters, including one from Paul Winfield.
