Background

Scope and content:

The collection comprises two boxes of administrative records beginning in 1975, and multiple boxes of photograph albums, slides, and scrapbooks for each year of the festival through 2006. Of interest is the 1976 scrapbook/photo album documenting the first year of the festival along with U.S. Bicentennial celebrations in San Jose.

Biographical / historical:

San Jose's Tapestry in Talent began with its first arts festival in 1976 as part of the country's bicentennial celebration, and continued annually with the Tapestry Arts Festival each Labor Day Weekend. The festival was a three-day celebration of the visual and performing arts held on the streets of downtown San Jose. Revenue from the festival provided seed money to bring arts outreach to neighborhoods, and arts education to local schools. The festival was for many years the City's largest fundraising event for arts education.
