Biographical / historical:
Christian Peter von Schmidt emigrated to America in 1827 settling in Indiana. His son, Alexis, later came to California via ship in 1849 where worked as civil engineer. Worked as U.S. surveyor, built dams and various other waterworks including Spring Valley Water Works, dry docks at Hunter's Point, blew up "Blossom Rock" in S.F. Bay; ventured into shipping business; invented pump for pumping dredge.
