Background
- Biographical / historical:
-
Mary Fabilli, born Amalia Elisa Fabiilli, on Feb. 16, 1914 was a poet and artist. The extra "i" was removed from her last name when the family moved to the United States from Italy. Her second marriage was to poet William Everson until they agreed to separate and he joined the Dominican Order as a lay brother in 1951 taking the name Brother Antonius. Mary Fabilli also joined the Dominican Order in 1953 as a member of the St. Albert Priory chapter of the Lay Dominicans. She died at her home in Berkeley, California on Sept. 2, 2011.
Robert Hawley was born in 1929 in Stockbridge, Wisconsin. By 1957, Hawley was in Berkeley, California, working as a bookseller specializing in Western Americana at the Holmes Book Company. In 1964, Robert Hawley and Stevens van Strum started the Oyez Press by soliciting poems from noteworthy American poets to be published in a series of broadsides. In 1978, Hawley opened his own book shop, the Ross Valley Book Company, in Albany, California.
