Background
- Biographical / historical:
- Abraham Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. In his early years Lincoln was a lawyer, an Illinois State Legislator, a member of the United States House of Representatives, and an unsuccessful candidate for United States Senate. In 1860 Lincoln was elected 16th President of the United States, and was the first Republican to hold that office. He was inaugurated after several southern states had seceded from the union over the slavery issue. Lincoln spent most of his presidency engaged in the war against the secessionist states, and was ultimately successful in restoring the union and abolishing slavery. Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington, DC on April 14, 1865.
