Subseries 12.1.04.  Roger A. Dudley, Jr. photograph collection, circa 1890s-1940s

Extent: 4 boxes (0.77 linear feet)

Scope and Content Note

Collection of photographs owned by Roger A. Dudley, Jr. Photographs taken by Walter P. Miller (a commercial photographer in Seattle), Captain H.H. Morrison (Hiram Hudson Morrison) of Port Townsend, Washington, and possibly other photographers. It is unknown if Dudley, Jr. took any of the photographs in this collection.
Roger Dudley, Jr. sold Harold Huycke the three photograph albums and corresponding negatives in 1957.

Biography/Organization History

Roger A. Dudley, Jr. (December 12, 1917-September 18, 2003) was born in Washington to Roger Alonzo Dudley, Sr. and Evelyn Deering Dudley. Both he and his father were commercial photographers in the Seattle area in the 20th century.
Roger Alonzo Dudley, Sr. was born in Massachusetts on November 6, 1895 and died in Washington on June 6, 1954. Evelyn Deering Dudley was born in Kentucky in 1897. Roger Dudley, Jr. had one brother named Jack Deering Dudley (June 21, 1919-October 12, 2004).
Roger Dudley, Sr. worked for the commercial photographer Walter P. Miller and in the mid 1930s bought out the business. Dudley, Sr. was one of the founding members of the "Professional Photographers of Seattle" in 1945, which is now known as the Seattle Professional Photographers Association (SPPA). Roger Dudley, Sr. was President of the SPPA in 1948, and his son was President in 1952. Roger Dudley, Jr. was also the President of the Professional Photographers of Washington in 1955.
Roger Dudley, Jr. took over his father's studio in the 1950s (likely after his father's death), and in the mid-1970s he retired. It seems as though Roger Dudley, Jr. took on some business partners at some point and created the studio Dudley, Hardin & Yang, Inc., although this fact is unverified.

Biography/Organization History

Harold J. (Pete) Hurd (1917-2006). Pete, the grandson of a Whidbey Island homesteader, was born to Charles and Edith Hurd, at home in Mukilteo, Washington, on September 4, 1917. Pete spent his youth in Mukilteo learning boat building from his father, spending time on the water and exploring the outdoors. In his early years he served in the Coast Guard in Alaska, the North Atlantic Ocean, and Panama. Pete became a Merchant Seaman and spent many years traveling the ocean routes and serving as a navigational officer on many different ships. On May 12, 1942, Pete was aboard the SS ESSO HOUSTON heading towards Aruba when they were torpedoed by a German U-boat. Five days after escaping with the rest of the crew in lifeboats, they reached the safety of St. Vincent. After serving with the Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska and Washington, Pete settled into the building and repairing of boats. He was a member of the Marine Carpenters Union and the Shipwrights Union. In retirement, Pete collected rare books focusing on Arctic exploration.

Crown Lumber Co. closed down in 1930 due to the Great Depression. The Mukilteo lighthouse was designed by the German architect Carl Leick and built in 1906.
