Subseries 8.2: Subject Collections
1937-2014
Scope and Content
This subseries contains collections of materials roughly ordered according to subjects, presumably by Vale. The subjects cover
diverse topics such as backpacking, Fascism, Satanism, and guns, and people such as Antonin Artaud, J.G. Ballard, Charles
Manson, various Beat authors, and members of Throbbing Gristle, a provocative, avant-garde musical and performance art group
formed in 1976, whose most significant members were Genesis P-Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti. There are a number of notable
materials, such as rare books by Beat authors, an extensive fan-fiction biography of Charles Manson, and early photographs,
correspondence, and ephemera from Throbbing Gristle. Items date from 1937-2014.
Organization and Arrangement
Arranged alphabetically by subject.

Subseries 8.4: Clippings
1946-2011
Scope and Content
This subseries contains newspaper and magazine clippings pertaining to film/literature/music reviews, human-technology interactions,
cultural discourse, and political/social dissent (i.e. on issues such as the wars on Iraq/Afghanistan and poverty). Some specific
topics with a particularly large number of clippings include the San Francisco Quake of 1989, the attempted assassinations
of John Paul II and Ronald Reagan, the death of Allen Ginsberg, the Leonard Lake murders, jand the mass suicide of Heaven’s
Gate members. Text clippings are interspersed with comic strip/cartoon clippings such as those from Dan Perkins’ This Modern
World. The bulk of the materials are from the 1990s and 2000s. Clippings primarily come from mainstream sources (i.e. SF Examiner
and The New Yorker), with the occasional underground source.
Organization and Arrangement
Arranged by either year or decade, depending on the amount of materials.

Subseries 9.2: Periodicals
1927-2011
Scope and Content
This subseries contains a physically expansive and thematically diverse collection of V. Vale’s periodicals, præsumably both
for leisurely and research-related purposes. The largest category is “Music” which includes cultural and topical periodicals
(
Rock Scene, Creem, Trouser Press, etc.) as well as audio technology/production guides (
Keyboard, Electronic Musician, Sound on Sound, etc.). Magazines come from sources as mainstream as the science and technology magazine
Wired to those with niche audiences like the German body suspension magazine
Expand. Of particular research value might be the four issues of the 1960s psychedelic periodical
SF Oracle. The “Lifestyle” category contains materials related to fashion, dining, and local news. There is also a sizable amount of
satirical magazines from the 1970s-1990s featuring title such as
Spy and
National Lampoon, and a collection of serial fiction publications from the late 1920s-1950s and 1980s –
Argosy and
Armchair Detective, in particular. Periodicals categorized as “International” were written in different languages. Note that while periodicals
have been placed under their own discrete, categorical subheadings, many periodicals cover overlapping subjects and could
fall under a different category. May contain some zine titles.
