The town of Purissima was located in San Mateo County, California about four miles south of Spanishtown (later Half Moon Bay).
The community was founded in the 1850s and flourished after Henry Dobbel bought land in the area from John Purcell and built
a large house. By the 1870s Purissima boasted a post office, several stores, a school, and a one-story hotel known as the
Purissima House. A lumber mill was built nearby. At the time it seemed as though Purissima might overtake Spanishtown as the
main population center on the San Mateo County Coastside, but a nearby oil discovery failed to spark a boom, and the later
Ocean Shore Railroad did not attract settlers to the area. By 1964 all that remained of Purissima was the school and the cemetery,
and the former burned not long after.
