J. F. B. Marshall of Kendal Green, Massachusetts sailed from Honolulu in March of 1840 in the bark Don Quixote under the command
of Captain John Paty. The vessel was to stop at Monterey, Santa Barbara, and then Mazatlan, from where Marshall would make
his way across Mexico and back to the East Coast of the United States. But upon arriving in Monterey Captain Paty was told
to put back out to sea since there was trouble with the "foreigners, who had supposedly plotted against Mexico and had been
arrested. After finally being allowed to put into Monterey, the Don Quixote sailed for Santa Barbara and then Mazatlan, encountering
the prison ship along the way. After arriving in Mexico another of the Don Quixote's passengers, Thomas Jefferson Farnham,
discussed the situation with the English consul, who successfully put pressure on the Mexican Government to release the prisoners.
