John McCrackan was born in New Haven, Connecticut ca. 1821-1823. He may have been educated in Rochester, New York. McCrackan
arrived in San Francisco aboard the ship "Balance" on November 24, 1849. Settling in that city, he practiced law, owned property
(including the "Balance"), and was active in local Whig, then Independent politics. McCrackan was also a member of the Society
of California Pioneers. He left San Francisco on January 16, 1854 for Connecticut and possibly a visit to Scotland, and was
living in Portland, Oregon by 1868.
