Note:
William S. Thomas (1812-1879) was born in Virginia and married Elizabeth L. Waite in 1840 in Illinois. He worked there as
a lawyer and a farmer, and went to California in 1849 possibly with the Green and Jersey County Company. By May of 1850 Thomas
had given up mining and operated a successful tavern and ox-team. He eventually returned to Greenville, Illinois, and later
became a member of the National Lincoln Monument Association.
