Abstract:
12 letters. 8 of them are from William Lee. Some are to his son Joseph N. Lee, others are to his wife Maria M. Lee, and one
is to his sister Mary. Many of these were written either en route to or from California. Two letters are from Joseph N. Lee
to his father while he was aboard ship or in port. There is also a handwritten death certificate and a handwritten death notification
from B. B. Brown to John J. Lee. All are accompanied by typescripts.

William J. Lee lived in New York and left for California in September 1849 during the early stages of the gold excitement.
Lee lived in Georgetown, Douglass' Mines, and Sacramento, and died in the last-named city on November 6, 1850 during the cholera
epidemic.
