As part of sanatorium's program, women taught to make pottery. Program began in 1911 and was headed by F.H. Rhead. In 1913,
Albert L. Solon replaced Rhead; and, in 1916, Solon replaced by F.H. Wilde. Program was abandoned in 1918.
Included among items about sanatorium is letter to San Jose Historical Museum from Mr. George Parrish requesting information
on sanatorium; Mr. Parrish is possible compiler of scrapbook.
Henry E. Bothin was born in 1853, came to California in 1875 where made fortune in real estate. In 1905, established a convalescent
home for children on his property in Ross; was named The Hill Farm. In 1907, formed the corporation, Bothin Convalescent Home
for Women and Children; expanding home to include women. In 1910, Hill Farm visited by Dr. P.K. Brown, interested in creating
tuberculosis sanatorium. In 1911, on land owned by Bothin, Dr. Brown completed first building of Arequipa Sanatorium. Designed
for working women from San Francisco who contracted tuberculosis. By 1948, tuberculosis had died down; part of sanatorium
offered to San Francisco Girl Scouts to be used as camping facility; by 1960's, the entire facility was being used by Scouts;
renamed Henry E. Bothin Youth Center. In 1984, facility was torn down.
