    Biography

Alice Gulick Gooch was one of four daughters of Martin Nicholas Gulick and his wife Annis C. Phelps Gulick. The Gooch family moved from Illinois to California in the late 1880's.
It is unclear where the Gooch family first settled in California, but we do know that they lived in National City in San Diego County for approximately 3 years (around 1899). They later relocated to Corona due to a demand for Mr. Gooch's citrus orchard fumigation business.
It was while living in Corona that Alice Gulick Gooch discovered her love of photography. She had her own dark room and did her own developing and printing. She even sold a few of her prints to family members in California and Illinois. She often experimented in the process of developing prints, which led her to produce more than one copy of the same negative. This collection contains many of these duplicate prints, generally darker or lighter versions of the original print.
According to notes made by the donor, Alice Gulick Gooch used to go up to the attic of the Gooch home in Corona and take panoramic pictures from the window. This collection contains panoramic prints of both "Old Baldy" (Mt. San Antonio) and the "Greyback Mountains" (the San Gorgonio Mountains).

    Collection Scope and Content Summary

This collection contains 131 photographs taken and developed by Alice Gulick Gooch between 1899-1932. These photographs document various Southern California locations in the counties of Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego; however, the bulk of the photographs were taken in San Diego County.
Most of the photographs taken by Alice Gulick Gooch are of scenes or houses; very few contain people. There are no portraits in this collection. Panoramic shots taken by Alice Gulick Gooch are in folder 2 (Los Angeles County) under "Old Baldy" and in folder 3 (Orange County) under "Santa Ana Mountains." In order to see the entire panoramic image, the researcher must place the set of images next to each other in the order noted on the back of each print.
This collection contains multiple copies of some prints. Alice Gulick Gooch's experimentation with developing techniques led her to develop the same print up to eight times using different methods. These duplicates were retained in order to document Gooch's photographic developing techniques; they are located in folder 8 at the end of the collection.
Most of the information in the container list for this collection represents caption information transcribed from the back of the photographs.
