Scope and content:

The collection includes material from Nichols about his time in the American Field Service as a volunteer ambulance driver and flying in the French Aviation Service during World War I. It includes correspondence, military documents, clippings and photographs. Also included are correspondence and military documents from his brother, John (Jack) R. Nichols, that relates to American volunteer ambulance drivers in the Balkans, Italy, and France, as well as American Tank Corps operations in France. The collection includes correspondence, military documents, clippings and photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Alan Hammond Nichols (1897-1918) served in the American Field Service in 1917. He served as a volunteer ambulance driver in France and aviator in the French army during World War I. Nichlos was part of the Class of 1919 at Stanford University. He enlisted as a volunteer in the first Stanford ambulance unit in Palo Alto. In February 1917, he was recruited into the American Field Service and was attached to Section Fourteen (S.S.U. 14). After six months, he enlisted in the French Aviation Service, receiving training at Avord, tours, pau, Plessis-Belleville. He was assigned to "chasse" flying at the front to chase and attack enemy aircraft. Nichlos learned about the SPAD (fighter plane) and was attached to Escadrille SPA 85. During the German advance of 1918, he was wounded while fighting off several German planes near Compiègne. He died of his wounds in June 1918. Nichols was awarded two French citations for his valor including the Croix de Guerre.
