Piobaireachd in the Music Library - the William Buck Collection

The Music Library has just acquired a remarkable collection of Scotch bagpipe music, a gift from the estate of William Buck of Mill Valley. Mr. Buck Cultivated both a practical and scholarly interest in pipe music. His collection includes 45 volumes of practical editions of music for the bagpipe, including several tutors for beginning performers on the instrument. There are 25 volumes of a more critical, historical nature; among them is a complete set of David Glen's Collection of Ancient Piobaireachd, and early 19th century series running to 100 numbers. Among the periodicals represented is a complete set of Piping Times, 1948-1969, the B.C. Piper's Newsletter, 1961-1970, and a long run of Ar Soner, la Revue du Folklore vivant de Bretagne, 1956-70. The Buck collection also contains photo copies of important primary source material of interest to students of Scottish traditional music: Angus Mackay's Collection of Ancient Piobaireachd ... Edinburgh, 1838, and two large manuscript volumes, assembled by Mackay, in the National Library of Scotland.
In addition to the printed materials, the Buck bequest includes a fine group of L-P discs (Some 46 in all) of bagpipe music, and a set of 31 Canyon discs of songs and chants by the American Indian.
