Background
- Scope and content:
-
These papers-originals, copies and extracts of documents-collected by H. H. Bancroft for his History of California, relate particularly to the Los Angeles region, and include an 1839 census for that area. The original collection is not to be used without permission of the Director. A bound volume of photocopy is available for consultation.
The documents, which were bound in a volume by H. H. Bancroft, have been unbound and placed in folders. Some repaired items, now oversize, have been placed in a separate portfolio. This has been noted in the report and in the first portfolio. The arrangement, roughly chronological, and the numbering are those of H. H. Bancroft.
A calendar of the documents and a partial list of correspondents follow.
