During World War II, Bunche worked intermittently at the Department of State but was often οΏ½on loan' to the Office of Strategic Services. In 1946 Bunche acted as the Chief of the Division of Dependent Area Affairs at the Department of State and was appointed the commissioner of the Anglo-American Caribbean Commission. This series is comprised of administrative materials generated and accumulated by Bunche at the Department of State. Materials include pamphlets, proposals, memoranda, instructional materials, and a telephone directory.

- Family requested that series 21, subseries 1: Personal Correspondence between Ralph J. Bunche and Ruth H. Bunche (boxes 476-480) were closed until the deaths of both Joan H. Bunche and Ralph Bunche Jr. As of April 2021, the family would like to review the materials in these boxes before lifting the restriction.
