Scope and content:

This series consists of materials generated during Bunche's career at the United Nations. Bunche was appointed head of the Trusteeship Division in 1946, which would later become the Trusteeship Council. He served as the assistant to the Special Committee on Palestine and became the principal secretary of the Palestine Committee in 1947. The series is divided into two sub-series: 1) UN General Materials and 2) Trusteeship Council.

Sub-Series Notes:

  1. This sub-series is made up of working papers that were generated and used by Bunche and his colleagues at the Trusteeship Council. It contains United Nations documentation of Trusteeship Council sessions, including special sessions with other councils; communication with other United Nations Divisions and the International Court of Justice; materials related to Bunche's visiting missions; studies and reports on non-self-governing territories; and official records generated by the General Assembly pertaining to or of special interest to the Trusteeship Council. Boxes 91-93 contain staff files and personnel records of persons employed and promoted by the Trusteeship Council during Bunche's tenure. Some of the official documents contain marginalia by Bunche. Council Sessions are sorted by number of session (e.g. First Session, Second Session); supporting materials are in chronological order by date received; and personnel records are sorted alphabetically by last name of employee.

Family requested that series 21, subseries 1: Personal Correspondence between Ralph J. Bunche and Ruth H. Bunche (boxes 476-480) were closed until the deaths of both Joan H. Bunche and Ralph Bunche Jr. As of April 2021, the family would like to review the materials in these boxes before lifting the restriction.
