Correspondence 1927-1971

Physical Description: 173 boxes

Scope and Contents

The Correspondence series contains letters, cablegrams, and invitations between Bunche and his academic and professional colleagues; professional, academic and service organizations; educational institutions; religious organizations; sororities and fraternities; family friends and the public. Bunche's correspondence with colleagues, organizations and the public detail his responsibilities to the United Nations, and highlight his commitment to peacekeeping, democracy and civil rights throughout the world. This series includes correspondence with many notable persons such as Trygve Lie, Dag Hammarskjold, U Thant, Adlai Stevenson, Count Folke Bernadotte, Eleanor Roosevelt, Alain Locke, Melville Herskovits, Martin Luther King, Jackie Robinson, Malcolm X, Walter White, W.E.B. Du Bois, Cecil Roberts, William Hastie, Charles Matthews, and a few items from each President of the United States from Franklin Roosevelt to Richard Nixon.
The series is organized chronologically by year, then alphabetically by correspondent. Some subject specific correspondence was maintained together and appears at the end of the alphabetical arrangement (e.g., "Correspondence Z, 1960 is followed by "Correspondence, Congo mission, A-F, 1960). Hate mail (usually with Bunche's annotation "arsenic ) and social invitations appear at the end of each year. Social invitations are also found in Boxes 266-276.

Calendars, Diaries and Notes 1930-1970

Physical Description: 8 boxes

Scope and Contents

Found in this series are Bunche's desk calendars, personal and appointment diaries, and notes and notebooks. The desk calendars are the page-a-day format, listing appointments and sometimes notes on activities and conversations. Only pages with notes were retained. The annual diaries from 1937 and 1938 contain longer entries about travels, activities and events in Bunche's life. The pocket diaries are more like calendars in nature, and contain brief notes on appointments. The notes and notebooks range in content from brief descriptions of a conversation or event, to longer journals describing trips, conferences and meetings.
Items are arranged chronologically by format.
