Part I. Correspondence

Scope and Content Note

The correspondence numbers 3767 letters of which 2013 are carbon copies of letters from Davies, and 1754 are originals to him. The bulk date from 1931. A few earlier items relate to the Bibliography of British History (1928). Planning for this book began in 1909, and these represent responses from early contributors. Davies acquired them in 1923 when he was nominated editor of the book. There are also a few letters dating from 1921-23 relating to tutorial students at Oxford. It is evident, however, that on leaving Chicago in 1930 Davies disposed of his correspondence except the above, and the letters from Firth.
For inclusion in the Library Catalogue of Manuscripts, the names of the historically important correspondents listed in Parts I and III of the Index-Outline Guide have been starred. The criteria used to distinguish these correspondents are: (1) for British persons, representation in the Dictionary of National Biography including supplements to 1985; and (2) for American persons, representation in the Dictionary of American Biography including supplements to 1965, together with such later persons as seem likely to be included in later supplements to that work. In short, general preeminence is the rule regardless of the significance of the correspondence in question.
In the list of correspondents, British titles are shown, even when conferred after the correspondence was written. Women's married names are shown even when married after the correspondence took place.
Letters are filed alphabetically by author; in the case of Davies's outgoing letters the order is alphabetical by addressee. Within each sub-group the order is chronological.

Part III. Personal and Research Papers

Scope and Content Note

The Index-Outline Guide is intended to be complete, but a few explanatory notes may assist the user.
In addition to the correspondence between Davies and Sir Charles Firth (Boxes 11 and 35) there are notes by Firth and letters to him. Their presence in the collection is explained as follows. As an undergraduate Davies made the acquaintance of Firth, Regius Professor of Modern History, whose lectures on the Revolution of 1688 he attended, and Firth observed merits in an essay which Davies wrote for a prize competition. Davies became Firth's secretary in 1914, the year in which he took the B.A. degree. He continued in this post, except for the last two years of the war, until the early 1920s. He acquired an intima te knowledge of the Professor's his torical researches and contributed to them in several ways. One of his first tasks was assistance with Firth's edition of Macaulay's History of England (6 vols., 1913-15). He prepared notes on the text and on Macaulay's corrections (or failure to correct), and he pointed out lapses in the original index. A totally new index was prepared, comprising nearly 100 pages of small type in double columns. 1 Firth planned a separate study of Macaulay, on whom he had delivered a series of lectures, and Davies collected notes for this and was entrusted with rewriting three of the chapters. He assisted in the preparation of Firth's lectures on British foreign policy, and occasionally delivered these and other lectures on the older man's behalf. He also contributed a chapter to a study projected by Firth on the social history of the Interregnum. On January 1, 1928, Firth wrote of the distractions which had prevented him from completing this study, and invited Davies to re-work it in the light of new evidence: cut & [UNK] as freely as you think good.... Your collaboration would be welcomed & we could both appear on the title page. 2
Another long-term project of Firth's was the history of the regiments of the New Model Army and of those raised during the Commonwealth and Protectorate. This involved Davies in much research, especially in the Clarke Papers at Worcester College and the Commonwealth Exchequer Papers at the Public Record Office.
Davies left Oxford for Chicago in 1927, but he visited England during summers and consulted with Firth about the completion of these and other planned books. He continued to supply notes for the regimental history.
In 1928 Firth formalized his intentions regarding his books and papers in a new will, with instructions that Lavies be consulted as to their disposition. In 1930 he signed a codicil giving Davies special powers with regard to the papers. Periodically he wrote that he was sorting his notes and his correspondence in the hope of simplifying the task of his literary executor. Even before his death he gave Davies a large collection of transcripts from the Lansdowne MSS in the British Museum, and he offered him notes on the period from the death of Oliver Cromwell to the Restoration. The latter were especially welcome, as Firth had expressed the wish (July 23, 1935) that Davies would write the history of Sept 58 to May 60 on a large scale to complete my 2 vols & Gardiner's long series.
The result of this association is that there are in the Davies Collection numerous lectures, essays, fragments, and notes deriving from the connection with Firth. Some of these, which are clearly from Firth's hand, are brought together in boxes 119, 120, and 121. After his death Firth's correspondence was destroyed without consultation with Davies, but 78 letters escaped because they were incorporated in packets of his notes and lectures. Of these, 36 on general subjects (1886-1929) are filed in box 55. Another 42, relating to his Notes on Diplomatic Relations (1906-13), are filed in box 119.
It has proved impracticable to segregate every single paper in which Firth had a hand, particularly where typed copies are involved, without specific evidence of authoship. For example, the Oxford lectures on the Revolution of 1688 (box 3) represent the work of both scholars. Nor have Firth's transcripts of documents generally been filed separately from those of Davies. It would seem pedantic to file one transcript made for Firth of a Carte MS from the [UNK] separately from another from the same collection made by Davies, and accordingly such transcripts will be found together, according to the repository in which the originals are kept. In short, practical utility has been the guide in dealing with such items.
A table of the correspondence of Sir Charles Firth is attached to this section of the Outline-Guide.
Members of the Permanent Research Staff of the Huntington were encouraged to undertake part-time teaching at neighboring institutions. Davies's association with the California Institute of Technology and the University of California at Los Angeles is represented in boxes 124-128.
A few items have been added to Part III of the collection to facilitate its use. The pedigree of the Davies family was supplied by Mr. David Griffiths, of Harrow, a nephew of Davies, who also identified some of the family photographs. The notes relating to Davies's [UNK] teaching career were given to Mrs. Davies by Mr. Philip Griffiths, of Cirencester, another nephew. The correspondence relating to Davies's (unsuccessful) attempt in 1923 to gain access to Foreign Office records relating to the Penjdeh incident (1885) were supplied by the Public Record Office. A bibliography of Davies's published writings first appeared as an appendix to his posthumous Essays on the Later Stuarts (1958), and has been brought up to date by the same compiler, who is also responsible for the list of Davies's reviews.

Note

1In the History of England (VI, 3007) the index is ascribed to W. B. Gray and G. Davies. Gray went off to war, and the major part of the task fell to Davies.
2Davies did not undertake such a revision, but with Firth's approval drew on the lectures in The Early Stuarts (1937). He sent Firth's manuscript to the Bodleian Library.
