Background

Scope and content:

This collection of assembled material covers the years 1902-1975 but concentrates on the Dada art movement from its inception in 1916 by Richard Huelsenbeck, Hugo Ball and Tristan Tzara, through to the 1940s. The collection begins with Raoul Hausmann manuscripts and letters followed by Richard Huelsenbeck manuscripts and correspondence. Then appear copies of letters to Herwarth Walden arranged alphabetically by correspondent and preceded by a file (folder 6) giving the history of the magazine Der Sturm.

The manuscripts and correspondence of Raoul Hausmann and Richard Huelsenbeck present a clear picture of the history of the Dada movement. Examples of phonetic poetry and essays on the topic of Dada are an integral part of this file. Hans J. Kleinschmidt also collected photocopied correspondence from Der Sturm Archive in order to write a history of the magazine Der Sturm and its founder, Herwarth Walden. These letters from artists and writers of the period give insight into the art developments of the early 20th century. Artists and writers include Guillaume Apollinaire, Sonia Delaunay, Otto Freundlich, Albert Gleizes, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Fernand Leger, Adolf Loos, August Macke, Thomas Mann, Franz Marc, Walter Mehring and Max Pechstein.

Biographical / historical:

Hans J. Kleinschmidt was a German-born psychiatrist with a deep interest in German expressionism. He was particularly concerned with trends in art and literature from the turn of the century to the end of the Weimar Republic. Richard Huelsenbeck asked Kleinschmidt to edit Memoirs of a Dada drummer, a book of Huelsenbeck's writings which first appeared in 1969. For research purposes, Kleinschmidt also gathered a large collection of correspondence about the German publication, Der Sturm and its founder Herwarth Walden.
