1a. PRELIMINARY BRIDGE DRAWINGS. 1931-1932.

Physical Description: 149 Items.

Scope and Content Note

Numbered drawings placed first in numerical order, and unnumbered drawings thereafter.
The Board of Consulting Engineers was created in January, 1932, by the Department of Public Works to review proposed Bridge construction plans. It comprised a panel of private architects and engineers, and included C. H. Purcell, Chief Engineer, and Charles Andrews, Bridge Engineer.
Original pencil tracings and drawings of preliminary designs of bridge construction submitted to the Board of Consulting Engineers at their meetings between January, 1932, and April, 1933. Plans show details of pier, tower, deck, cantilever, anchor, tunnel, and span construction. The typical size of a drawing is 2 by 35.

234 page report of a presidential commission sent to examine various proposals for bridge construction. Contains minutes of Commission meetings, studies of traffic patterns, estimates of the economic impact of the bridge, reviews of proposals, recommendations, maps, plans, and charts.
Of special interest is a proposal to build a traffic tube under the Bay at the approximate site of the current BART tube.
