The collection consists of the legislative files and related papers from Richard Richard's career as a California state senator.

Richard Richards was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1916; AB, University of Southern California, 1939; received law degree from University of Southern California, 1942; chairman, Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee, 1950 & 1952; delegate, national conventions, 1948-64; Los Angeles County senator, California State Senate, 1954-62.

Biographical Narrative

Richard Richards was born in 1916 in Cedar rapids, Iowa. Moving to California, he attended the University of Southern California. getting his AB in 1939 and law degree in 1942. Active in local Democratic Party politics, Richards served as chairman of the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee in 1950 and 1952. and was a delegate to the national conventions from 1948-1964. In 1954 he was elected to the California State Senate where he served as the lone Los Angeles County senator until 1962.

This collection was given to the library by Mr. Richards in 1964 and represents the legislative files and documentation of his years in the State Senate. In virtually all cases the folder headings and contents are those used by Richards himself. Because they were turned over to the library in no particular order. however. the arbitrary division into legislative files. legislative committees, and subject files was done for ease of access and description.
