Scope and Contents
Material concerning transportation which was once part of the Hopkins Transportation Library at Stanford.
This collection contains multiple accessions from various donors over many years, including a ledger from an English sailing
vessel dated 1711-1757, railroad stock and bond certificates signed by Hopkins Huntington, deeds and legal documents involving
a variety of rail companies (including a list of founding stockholders for the Oakland Railroad Co. in 1868), and a great
deal of Southern Pacific Railroad material, some of which was sent directly to the Hopkins Library while it was under the
care of director Jeanette Hitchcock in the 1940s. Stanford also holds Southern Pacific's archive (M1010).
In 2022-2023, approximately 30 linear feet of formerly-circulating railroad, shipping & aviation pamphlet files were added
to M0175. This material dates from 1845 to 1977, with the majority from the early to mid-20th century.
Most represented in this addendum is material concerning railroads, including volumes dedicated to regulation and commerce
(especially freight tariffs and other tax and legal matters). Some railroad publications such as those published by the Association
of American Railroads are devoted to
advocacy. There are also many company reports (Some Annual Reports are cataloged individually), tourist brochures and guides,
timetables, maps, promotions and advertisements (including proofs), employee handbooks,
and maunfacturer catalogs and promotional brochures. Many of the mid-to-late 1930s travel pamphlets were obtained from Palo
Alto travel agencies.
