Margaret Blake Alverson was born in Illinois, June 12, 1836 and came to Stockton in November 1851. She began her career singing in churches, then sang in operas, and finally gave voice lessons for some 40 years to over 1,000 pupils. She published a book describing her career -- Sixty years of California song (San Francisco: Sunset Publishing House, 1913). She died January 17, 1923 in Oakland.
