The Berton W. Crandall photographs (1869-1963) include the images of the Stanford University campus, Herbert Hoover, Lou Henry Hoover, the Hoover family, Leland Stanford, and Jane Lathrop Stanford. Images include the Stanford campus before and after the 1906 earthquake.
The collection consists of two parts. Part 1 includes images of the life and career of Herbert Hoover and his family. It also includes a section of miscellaneous photographs. Part 2 includes images depicting the Stanford campus before the 1906 earthquake and damage resulting from the earthquake, as well as other general photographs. Materials in Part 2 are distinguished from those in part 1 by the "S" preceding each item number. Both parts consist of a variety of formats that include photographic prints, nitrate, acetate, and glass plate negatives. Negatives are housed in their own boxes by format.

Berton Woodford Crandall (1882-1979) was a photographer. His family settled in Palo Alto, California, in 1898. He graduated from Stanford University in 1906 and remained in Palo Alto as an architectural photographer. Crandall owned a studio and photographic supply and equipment store on University Avenue. He was active on the City Council and in the Palo Alto Historical Association.

This collection of photographs was given to the Hoover Institution Library & Archives in 1960 by the photographer himself, Berton W. Crandall, from Palo Alto, California.
- Processing information:

The collection was reprocessed for digitization in 2025. Glass plate negatives were rehoused. Nitrate negatives were rehoused separately, and most were sent to a vendor for imaging. The dates of the objects in the collection may not be accurate. It was out of scope to modify existing dates for the project. Objects that had no date or were marked as "undated," were updated with "circa 1888-1953" for objects in Part 1: Herbert Hoover and family, and "circa 1900-1907" for objects in Part 2: Stanford campus. Additionally, it was found that items may be non-sequentially labeled, appearing to skip numbers. The following items were found to be missing and removed from the finding aid: 1) Item S-41: Entrance Gate to Palm Drive (negatives), box 5; and 2) Item S-308-7: Mrs. Leland Stanford, late photograph (glass plate).
