Scope and content:

This index volume lists names and numbers of all inmates in San Quentin & Folsom prisons (1910).

Biographical / historical:

San Quentin is the oldest (1852) and largest prsion in the California state system. Located on the Bay north of San Francisco, the prison held both men and women before 1927. It is the only prison in the state with a gas chamber and all prisoners convicted of first degree murder were formerly sent there. Folsom Prison (1880) is located in northeastern Sacramento County.
