Description
The Macomber Collection consists of one scrapbook of clippings, programs, handbills and obituaries from the Montana-Idaho area(1885-1890) and two photograph albums, one depicting Spanish American War scenes in San Francisco (1898) and the other depicting San Francisco area sites and unidentified members of the J.H.Macomber Family.
Background
J.H. Macomber (1836-1917), a Methodist minister and Civil War veteran, was U.S. Army chaplain at Fort Custer, Mont. (1885-1887); Spokane Falls, Wash.(1889); and, Fort Sherman, Ida. (1890). While Macomber was stationed at Fort Custer and Fort Sherman, his family created a scrapbook detailing their lives there. Later Macomber was assigned to the Presidio at San Francisco, Calif. (1898). Here the Macombers created photograph albums depicting many ships, locations and activities identified with the Spanish American War period. Macomber's daughter, Esther C. Macomber, was later an Elocution and Physical Education instructor at College of the Pacific (1917).
