Abstract: Joseph Crawhall was an illustrator, making colored woodblocks for books such as
A Collection of Right Merrie Garlands (1864) and
Olde Ffrendes Wyth Newe Faces (1883)He also illustrated
Garlands for North-Country Anglers (1864),
Chaplets from Coquet-Side (1873), and Border Notes & Mixty-Maxty (1880). The collection consists of proof copies, scrapbooks, and limited editions
of Crawhall's works and clippings concerning Northumberland and Newcastle-upon-Tyne around the time Crawhall was mayor. There
is also biographical material on Charles Keene, artist-cartoonist for
Punch, and letters from other artists and original drawings by Joseph Crawhall, Jr. (1861-1913), a well-known animal painter.

Joseph Crawhall was born in 1821; became an illustrator, making colored woodblocks for books such as

Scope and Content
Collection consists of proof copies, scrapbooks, and limited editions of the works of English wood-block illustrator Joseph
Crawhall. Includes heavily annotated scrapbooks containing pen-and-ink sketches, wood-block book plates, and heraldic drawings.
Clippings concern Northumberland and Newcastle-upon-Tyne around the time Crawhall was mayor, and also biographical material
on Charles Keene, artist-cartoonist for
Punch. Also includes letters from other artists and original drawings by Joseph Crawhall, Jr. (1861-1913), a well-known animal
painter.
