    Collection Scope and Content Summary

This collection contains newspapers published in locations outside of the state of California. The collection is stronger in its coverage of the United States than it is of foreign countries. Various newspapers in this collection contain coverage of the post-Revolutionary War and the early national periods. Coverage is particularly strong for the Antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction periods in American history.
Researchers interested in the history of the United States during the post-revolutionary and early national periods should consult the following Boston, Massachusetts newspapers: Boston Gazette, Columbian Centinel , Independent Chronicle, Massachusetts Gazette, and the New England Paladium. In addition, there are several issues of The Herald (New York, New York) and the Pennsylvania Journal and Weekly Advertiser (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) for this period. A variety of newspapers in the collection represent the British perspective on this period, including The British Press, The London Chronicle , Middlesex Journal, The Morning Chronicle, The Sun, and The Times, all published in London.
Coverage of the Antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction periods appears in a wide variety of mid-nineteenth century newspapers from many Eastern and Midwestern states. This period is especially well represented in the following New York City newspapers: New York Herald, Harper's Weekly, and The New York Tribune, as well as in the Hamburger Schnellpost (Hamburg, Pennsylvania; in German), The Philadelphia Inquirer (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), the Daily Richmond Examiner (Richmond, Virginia), and the Daily National Intelligencer (Washington, D.C.).
