Abstract: This collection contains newspapers
published in locations outside of the state of California. The collection is stronger in its
coverage of the United States than it is of foreign countries. Various newspapers in this
collection contain coverage of the post-Revolutionary War and the early national periods.
Coverage is particularly strong for the Antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction periods in
American history.

Acquisition Information
A significant portion of the newspapers in this collection (133 titles from U.S. states
other than California and 44 foreign titles) were given to the library by Velma Dunlap in
1971 along with the papers of her husband John "Sky" Dunlap (MS-R21), who was an Orange
County newspaperman. Special Collections and Archives staff has added other titles from a
variety of sources.

Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection contains newspapers published in locations outside of the state of
California. The collection is stronger in its coverage of the United States than it is of
foreign countries. Various newspapers in this collection contain coverage of the
post-Revolutionary War and the early national periods. Coverage is particularly strong for
the Antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction periods in American history.
Researchers interested in the history of the United States during the post-revolutionary
and early national periods should consult the following Boston, Massachusetts newspapers:
Boston Gazette,
Columbian
Centinel
,
Independent Chronicle,
Massachusetts Gazette, and the
New England Paladium.
In addition, there are several issues of
The Herald (New York,
New York) and the
Pennsylvania Journal and
Weekly Advertiser (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) for this period. A variety of
newspapers in the collection represent the British perspective on this period, including
The British Press,
The London
Chronicle
,
Middlesex Journal,
The Morning Chronicle,
The Sun, and
The Times, all published in London.
Coverage of the Antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction periods appears in a wide variety
of mid-nineteenth century newspapers from many Eastern and Midwestern states. This period is
especially well represented in the following New York City newspapers:
New York Herald,
Harper's Weekly, and
The New York Tribune, as well as in the
Hamburger Schnellpost (Hamburg, Pennsylvania; in German),
The Philadelphia Inquirer (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), the
Daily Richmond Examiner (Richmond, Virginia), and the
Daily
National Intelligencer
(Washington, D.C.). Researchers will find later periods
covered by scattered issues from a variety of cities.
