Arrangement
The photographs are arranged by series, according to Jackson's
Descriptive Catalogue of the Photographs of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories for the Years 1869 to 1873 (United States. Geological Survey of the Territories. Misc. Publication No. 5. Washington, 1874). Numbers 23 through 33 of
this set are not to be found in this catalog, but are apparently from an expedition of 1874. See Clarence S. Jackson's
Picture Maker of the Old West (New York, 1947) for details of this trip. Some of the prints in this set lack either the photographer's number or description,
which have been supplied from the catalog.
Scope and Content
Views of the American West taken by W.H. Jackson on the Hayden Expeditions (or "Hayden Surveys"). Views include mining, quarrying
granite, landscapes, pioneer homesteads, geysers (at Yellowstone), hunting, camp scenes, adobe ruins, cave dwellings, pack
animals, etc.
