Scope and Content Note

Therese Jelenko was a young piano student who in 1903 accompanied the Stein family - Michael Stein, his wife Sarah, and their son Allan - on their move from San Francisco to Paris, where they joined Michael's brother Leo and sister Gertrude. The Steins soon befriended such artists as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse and become important collectors of contemporary art. In 1935 Sarah and Michael returned from France to settle in Palo Alto. Shortly after Michael's death in 1938, Sarah - a long-time friend of Rosalie Meyer Stern - became close friends with Elise Stern Haas, who over time would purchase many works from Sarah's collection. These pieces, along with works from other sources, would be inaugurated in 1955 as the Michael and Sarah Stein Memorial Collection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Contains material given to Elise Stern Haas by Therese Jelenko primarily relating to the Stein family and their art collections. Includes photographs of the Steins; the Cone sisters (friends of the Steins and distinguished art collectors themselves); and the painter Henri Matisse, a teacher and close friend of Sarah Stein. Many photographs picture portions of the Stein collections as they were displayed in their various residences. Also includes original drawings by Sarah Stein (many of them portraits of Therese Jelenko); two photographs of drawings by Henri Matisse; documentation related to the sources of the photographic material contained herein; and notes on various Matisse paintings in the Stein collection.
Because of the potential research value of the items contained in this series, an item-level listing follows this series description.
Individuals: Therese Ehrman Jelenko, Sarah Stein, Michael Stein, Allan Stein, Gertrude Stein, Leo Stein, Henri Matisse, Etta Cone, Clarabel Cone, Yvonne Daunt Stein, Daniel Stein, Harriet Levy, and Raymond Duncan.

Photographers: G. Moretti, Florence, Italy; V.A. Sorignet, Paris.

Selected digitized items from this series are listed at the end of the finding aid. A few images of the Stein’s home in Paris are identical to images in an album from the Photographs from the Annette Rosenshine papers (BANC PIC 1964.049--ALB).
