Scope and content:

The Hugh Norwood Port Moresby Research Materials are comprised of Norwood's research documentation for his study of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Norwood used these materials for his study, Port Moresby Urban Villages and Squatter Areas which documents population change and urban development in Papua New Guinea.

Arranged in two series: 1) SETTLEMENT MATERIALS and 2) AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS.

Biographical / historical:

Hugh Norwood was educated in the late 1950s and early 1960s in economics, social and health administration, and town planning. During the late 1960s and early 1970s he worked in Africa and later in New Zealand.

In 1975, he was appointed by the Papua New Guinea government to lead a team charged with preparing a national housing plan. Norwood taught a course in land administration in the geography department at the University of Papua New Guinea and, in 1979, taught at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

Norwood took a leave of absence in 1982 to research his study on population change and urban growth in Port Moresby. His report was published in 1984.
