Abstract: Charles Bennett Gullans (1929-1993) was a poet, bibliographer, and an English and creative writing professor at UCLA from
1961 until his death. He also founded the Symposium Press in 1978. The collection consists of Gullans' literary manuscripts,
correspondence, clippings, a magazine, and related material including manuscript and page proofs for his book titled,
Arrivals and departures (1962), materials relating to Gullans' work on a UCLA library exhibit, and a copy of a poetry magazine containing some of
his poems.

Charles Bennett Gullans was born May 5, 1929 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; BA (1948) and MA (1951), University of Minnesota;
Ph.D, Stanford, 1956; assistant professor of English, University of Washington, 1955-61; taught English and creative writing
at UCLA from 1961 until his death; founded Symposium Press in 1978; his translations of poetry include
The wrong side of the rug (1986), and he compiled bibliographies of the works of Scottish poet Robert Aytoun and contemporary poets Turner Cassity
and J.V. Cunningham; wrote seven volumes of poetry between 1962 and 1990, including
Moral poems (1957),
Arrivals and departures (1962),
Many houses (1981), and
Letter from Los Angeles (1990); died March 30, 1993 in Los Angeles.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of literary manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, a magazine, and related material of Charles Gullans,
