Biography/History
Rose C. Stolz was a teacher and later a principal in the San Francisco area, who retired by 1936. She devoted a lifetime to
collecting hundreds of autographs of opera and theatre stars. Stolz either knew the theatre celebrities personally or had
seen them perform. In 1937 she gave her collection to actor, author, and poet Madefrey Odhner.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of theatrical autographs dating from the late 1800s through the 1930s that Rose C. Stolz collected
over her lifetime. Autographs are on correspondence or on small pieces of paper that are either in folders or scrapbooks within
the collection. Some of the autographs include: actors Richard Bennett and Richard Carle, writer Lillian Smith, sopranos Alice
Nielsen and Yvonne de Treville, and filmmaker Nunnally Johnson.
