Scope and content:

Consists of the bulk of Lamantia's papers, and includes writings by Lamantia and contemporary writers, publicity and professional materials, and research materials. Lamantia's writings are in the forms of proofs, typescripts and manuscripts, drafts of poems and prose, and notebooks. Typescripts are of all published works by Lamantia except Narcotica, as well as unpublished typescripts including Tau. Poems and prose are both handwritten and typed, and represent all stages of writing, from notes and first drafts to final works. Lamantia's writings are arranged as follows: typescripts and proofs, poems, prose, notebooks and notes. Writings by contemporary writers include typescripts and drafts as well as finished pieces. Writers include Allen Ginsberg, John Hoffman, Michael McClure, Paolo Lionni, Stephen Schwartz, and Ronnie Burk. Some original art pieces by contemporary artists are also included. Publicity and professional materials include interviews, biographical materials, reviews of Lamantia's works, poetry reading fliers, and publishing rights agreements. Also included are materials from courses taught at San Francisco Art Institute in 1979 and 1982. Research materials include articles, books, newspapers, magazines, and unwritten postcards, pertaining to topics including astrology, geometry, Native American culture and spirituality, and Egyptian mythology.

Arrangement:

Minimally arranged; correspondence has been moved to Series 1. Materials in cartons are roughly sorted chronologically; within cartons files are arranged into works by Lamantia, works by others, professional materials, and research materials.
