John Chesterfield Hines (1877-1962) was a author, singer in Broadway productions, and a radio personality. The collection
consists of Hines' manuscripts, galley proofs, correspondence, a scrapbook, photographs, clippings, and books.
Background
John Chesterfield Hines was born in 1877 in San Francisco, California; began writing as a boy, covering baseball for the weekly
magazine, Olympic; sailed to Alaska in 1900; after return, began writing stories about dogs under the name Jack Hines, published in Redbook, Harper's bazaar, Liberty, and other magazines; wrote Minstrel of the Yukon, an Alaskan adventure (1948) and Wolf dogs of the north (1948); appeared under the name Jackson Hines as a singer in Broadway productions, Passing show of 1915, Her regiment, Pinafore, and others; appeared in entertainment clubs, as well as on the radio program, Death Valley days and on his own radio program on WJNO, Palm Beach, Florida; died in December 1962.
