Scope and Content Note

This subseries consists primarily of letters received by Arntz from artists or their families, art historians, collectors, and others. Most letters from artists concern reproduction rights and submissions for biographical notes in Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub's Die Graphik des Expressionismus in Deutschland . Several artists seek Arntz's assistance in their search for artwork lost during World War II. An extensive postwar correspondence with Nell Walden concerns the sale of her collection at Stuttgarter Kunstkabinett.

Heckel comments on Hartlaub's book and relates biographical details about Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Otto Mueller, including Mueller's joining Die Brücke. Heckel also mentions Max Kaus, Heinrich Nauen, and Georg Tappert. The letter to Ketterer concerns the title of Heckel's etched portrait of Müller-Wulkow. Included is a 1925 letter from Heckel to Hans Brass about pricing and selling of Heckel's artwork to collectors, as well as a 1963 letter to Arntz from Walter Cantz.

Another large file of catalog sheets is arranged alphabetically by artists' names. It includes information on artworks offered at auctions held between 1948 and 1962. This file is fragmentary beginning with the letter K and continuing through R.

The catalog sheets frequently include prices, marked by hand, and illustrated matter mounted on verso. Occasionally, information about current location, provenance, inclusion of the artwork in past exhibitions, and references to bibliographies has been added.

The auction files document auction no. 485, 500, 514, 515, 520, and 524 held between 1965 and 1972. The file for auction no. 485 consists of catalog sheets with reproductions mounted on their versos. Occasionally, information about current location, provenance, inclusion of the artwork in exhibitions, and bibliographical references has been added. The files for auction nos. 500, 514, 515, 520, and 524 also comprise correspondence, lists of sellers, lists of artworks with lot numbers and prices, and notes regarding delivery and transport. They are arranged by auction number.
