Scope and content:

Russo-Dutch Field Hospital of the Red Cross (Russko-Gollandskii polevoi lazaret Krasnago kresta) Manchuria, Chita, and Dubovskoe District in Primorskii Krai. Album of photographs taken by a Russian volunteer medic with the Russian Society of Red Cross, which was working in collaboration with its Dutch cohort, featuring the work of mobile field hospitals in remote regions to help Russian soldiers during the Russo-Japanese War. Contains 167 gelatin silver print photographs mounted recto and verso onto 21 heavy cardstock leaves. Photographs are in two sizes, the smallest measuring approximately 7.5 x 7.5 cm, and the largest 11 x 8 cm. Album made in Saint Petersburg by A.A. Schnell, illustrated with the iconic Red Cross emblem and both the Russian and Dutch flags in full color and engraved title. Images show soldiers in trenches, climbing lookouts, and one man particularly battle weary. There are scenes of men stationed at various posts, and engaging among locals - most being Manchurians, and some Chinese. A few photographs show Manchurians sporting long guns ready for battle as well. A quick-to-erect Red Cross hospital tent is shown in one photograph, appearing to be bursting at the seam with injured and recovering guests. A few scenes show rows of multiple white canvas tented horse-drawn carriages for collecting wounded soldiers. A cemetery was established to bury the dead. Photographs show varying types of crosses at the head of each grave suggest some of the deceased's faiths: Orthodox and Catholic or Protestant.
