Description
The collection comprises the records of Irvine Students Housing, Inc. (ISHI), an organization at the University of California,
Irvine, that established and operated a housing cooperative, the ISHI Co-op, on campus. Materials include the constitution
and by-laws, articles of incorporation, research materials on cooperative philosophy and housing, correspondence, agreements,
reports, federal grant applications, meeting minutes, financial records, and co-op management materials.
Background
Irvine Students Housing, Inc. (ISHI) was officially incorporated in 1975. It was formed by students at the University of California,
Irvine, in an effort to establish cooperative housing as a low cost alternative to existing on-campus housing. Residents conducted
their own management, cooking, cleaning and maintenance. The ISHI Co-op, by agreement with the UCI Student Housing office,
was housed in a building with ten apartments at the Verano Place housing community on campus. In 2007 ISHI disbanded, the
Co-op ceased to operate, and the apartments were made available for standard graduate student housing.
