Correspondence 1888-1960

Scope and Contents

This series contains incoming and some outgoing correspondence from Sawyer family members: Frank, Gertrude, Preston, and Ariel. There exists a small amount of correspondence from Sawyer relatives - the Fields and Rice families.
Preston's mail includes personal, professional, and editorial correspondence, plus fan mail from early film stars and theater people. From 1916-1919 he is involved in an international exchange and pen pal system. Many letters include photographs and other enclosures.
There is a fair amount of correspondence written on postcards documenting the family's travels, and recording daily life in and around Santa Cruz. Several boxes of postcards written by others, were collected by Preston and family, and are partially sorted by location, eg., Santa Cruz County and California, by other U.S. states, and by country.
In 1942-1943 Preston writes to his mother Gertrude, from Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Arkansas. He falls ill and while in hospital, writes about his time in Ward 544. His correspondence includes photographs and descriptions of his ward mates and hospital routines.
In addition, there is a fair amount of Santa Cruz Sentinel correspondence from the years 1919-1960. The correspondence is addressed to the newspaper's many division editors including: auto, city, entertainment, fashion, needle-craft, news, photo, radio, religious, sports, and travel. The correspondence comprises press releases for local businesses, organizations, and current events in Santa Cruz and California. Of note are requests and solicitations, employment application letters, vintage advertising, announcements for Hollywood boycotts and blacklisted entertainers in film and radio, political ads, and general information from industry and government especially pertaining to WWII, such as Notices to Mariners. The correspondence series also includes a brief letter each from Theodore Roosevelt and Benjamin Harrison.

Photographic material circa 1873-1960

Scope and Contents

This series contains photographs, albums, view masters, glass plates, and newspaper printing plates.
The Sawyer family, and especially Preston, were inveterate amateur photographers and the work created or collected spans from the late 1800's through the 1950's. The subjects include family portraits and outings, neighbors, residences, and businesses. It also includes stock photographs from local "director" Frank Smith's productions with Preston and friends in costume acting on beaches and in the parks and woods of Santa Cruz. Preston also collected several vintage view master sets from the family travels.
Photographs exist from Preston's column "Santa Cruz Yesterdays". These are represented in black and white prints, glass plates, and newspaper plates. Other glass plates and photographs are from the Pan Pacific International Exposition and the Golden Gate International Exposition. Albums describe family travels, the San Francisco Boys Club of 1912/1915, and vintage portrait and travel albums of indeterminate age and/or provenance.
