Description
This collection comprises materials accumulated by Dr. Warren L. Bostick during his tenure as Dean of the California College of Medicine and the University of California, Irvine/California College of Medicine. The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, a complete curriculum vitae of Dr. Bostick (in one volume), and a three volume work College of Medicine, University of California, Irvine, Faculty Leaders 1st 25 Years, containing curriculum vitae and photos of deans, vice chancellors, and department chairmen from 1964-1989. This collection provides an insider's view of the history of the California College of Medicine as well as biographical information on Dr. Bostick himself.
Background
Warren L. Bostick was born on July 28, 1914 in Dallas, Texas. He received his M.D. degree at the University of California, San Francisco in 1940. As president of the California Medical Association in 1961-1962, he was active in gaining recognition from the state legislature for osteopathic physicians in California to receive medical doctor degrees. In 1964, Bostick became Dean of the California College of Medicine (CCM), the school that was to become the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine (UCI COM). As Dean, Bostick had the task of gaining full accreditation for CCM as a medical school. Bostick's tenure as Dean also saw a bitterly fought move from Los Angeles to Orange County for CCM to become part of UCI and an unsuccessful campaign for an on-campus University Hospital. After resigning as Dean of the medical school in 1973, Bostick remained with the College of Medicine as a Professor of Pathology and has held Emeritus status since 1985. In 1977, Bostick was honored with the Lauds and Laurels award for University Service.
