Brightfield was born on October 31, 1897 in Belleville, Illinois; AB, 1919, AM, 1921, Ph.D, 1926, Harvard University; instructor in English, Indiana University, 1922-24; assistant professor, 1926-35, associate professor, 1935-44, and professor of English, UC Berkeley; published works include Theodore Hook and his novels (1928), The issue in literary criticism (1932), John Wilson Croker (1940), and Victorian England in its novels, 1840-1870 (1968); he died in 1964.
